Time

The term patina is sometimes used in conjunction with bronze pieces, wooden furniture, oil paintings, etc. to describe the effect of time, chemicals and handling on the surface--and sometimes the geometry--of an object. Beyond copper and wood, time also alters electronics and LEDs. To some, those alterations may look like mistakes or signals of broken systems but at Disorient, we call that "LED patina." Embracing the beauty of decay we accept those signs of time as contemporary manifestations of wabi-sabi.

Patina

LED patina is Disorient's collaboration with time. We contend that broken LED circuits, are not in need of repair but rather add depth to a piece. Wear and tears are proof of engagement, proof of a life well lived, not bothered by details or concerns for one's appearance. The structure conceptually holding the piece together is GlamTech in action. States of LED patina are fleeting and precious. They should be cherished.

Buffing

As new generations of DOers come online, self-activation sometimes incites newcomers to repair LED pieces. Caring for objects in our distributed LED art library is welcome and appreciated. DOers learn and sometimes are inspired to create new pieces by attending to older works. We call this buffing the LEDs much like one would buff a silver candle holder. No doubt time will find ways to erode systems again, contributing to the dialog between nature and culture that we is patina.
