Born in Leipzig to divorced bohemian parents (a cabaret artist and a violinist), I was raised mainly by my grandmother in Dresden. By the time I was 16, I had moved to Berlin and made my debut as a cabaret dancer. I was working in film, and I began dancing nude. I was scandalous, androgynous and infamous, quickly making a name for myself on the Berlin scene. I wore heavy dancer’s make-up, which on the black and white photos and films of the time came across as jet black lipstick painted across the heart-shaped part of my skinny lips, and charcoaled eyes.[ My hair was cut fashionably into a short bob and was frequently bright red.
