Every year, the shower cell designs and builds Disorient camp showers at Burning Man. And every year, we get a little closer to the perfect solution.

Notes on Disorient Showers by Jack B - 20260812

In 2023 we spent a lot of time building the shower structure: figuring things out on the fly, custom-cutting wood, etc. At the end of the burn we tried to set the stage to reconstruct the structure in 2024.

Each piece of wood was numbered and numerous photographs were taken. Before the 2024 burn drawings were created from the photographs that were intended to help the shower team reconstruct the 2023 structure. (Note that in the drawings the north end of the structure is the end with the wastewater tank, not the actual compass direction). The intent of the drawings and photographs was to remind the team about what they had previously done, and not to serve as a set of instructions for another group to build it in their place.

In 2024 the structure was built for the most part following the drawings. Changes were made in the way the vertical pieces in the center of the doorways were attached, which were documented with photographs. The drawings were not updated.

In 2025 several changes were made. The construction of the ver?cal pieces in the center of the doorways was changed. These pieces were labeled with leRers and documented with photographs. The marking of the plywood wall pieces was also changed from numbers to the following nomenclature:
• A letter O or I designated whether the piece is an interior or exterior wall.
• The letter N, S, E, or W designates the direction that the piece faces (north is the end of the structure with the wastewater tank)
• Numbers 1, 2, etc. are used to designate multiple sheets of plywood used at that location.
The drawings were not revised to reflect these changes.
In addition, some numbered pieces went walkabout and were replaced with with unnumbered pieces.

Materials, Tools and Drawing For Shower Drain Construction

- Qty 5 - 2” ABS shower drain with 4-1/4 strainer HD # 1003=316-820 ( Box # Oatey 420442). These break easily when being removed from the tubs and need to be replaced every year.
- Qty 2 - 10’ lengths 2” ABS pipe. This connects the tub drains to the main drain line.
- Qty 2  10’ lengths 3” ABS pipe. This is used for the main drain line.
- Qty 6 - 2” ABS pipe couplings, inline. These are used, as necessary, to allow breaking down and reconnecting sections of the 2" drain lines. 
- Qty 5 - 2” ABS 90 degree LONG elbow 
- Qty 5 - 2” flexible 90  degree coupling , Fernco fittings.
Items 4 and 5 can be used interchangeably. Both are specified to provide flexibility during construction and re-use.
- Qty 9 - 2” flexible straight couplings, Fernco fittings. These allow sections of the plumbing to be disassembled and saved for reuse.
- QTY 6 - 3” TO 2” ABS pipe couplings
- Qty 6 - 3” ABS pipe couplings, inline. These are used, as necessary, to allow breaking down and reconnecting sections of the 3" drain lines.
- Qty 3 - 3” ABS pipe 90 degree 
- Qty 3 - 3” ABS pipe 4 way couplings.
- Qty 2 - 3” flexible couplings . Fernco fittings
- Qty 1- 3 in. ABS DWV Hub x FIPT Adapter
- Qty 1 - 3 in. ABS DWV MPT Cleanout Plug]
- QTY 1 - ABS glue 16 oz
- Qty 1 - 16” water pump plier; needed to tighten large nut on shower drain fitting.
- Qty 1. - hacksaw to cut ABS pipe.
Sandpaper to smooth cut pipe edges.

Notes
a) Quantities include at least one spare to allow for breakage or mistakes during construction.
b) In some cases redundant parts are specified to allow flexibility during construction; not all parts will be used.
