The Delta Shade is a shade structure designed to resist high winds, be affordable, easy to assemble and protect you from the sun with flair.

==Delta Shade in Argentina (Jan. 2010)==
A version of the first design (V-shaped legs) with a new type of triangulation. We used four triangles of plywood (see details in photos below) instead of one large rectangular plywood piece. This solution was not strong enough for the summer winds and thunderstorms of the Mendoza region. 
There is still the problem of the shade fabric getting worn and eventually being cut at the inner frame junction even though this time we cut the plywood at 45 degrees. Next time, let's try to create a smooth area by using a 4 in. plumbing plastic pipe to cover the 2x4 and the plywood at this junction.

==Delta Shade for Astral Carpet Lounge, Figment, New York City (Jun. 27, 2008 - Oct. 12, 2008)==
The first attempt at a 12' wide delta. It survived on the island for 3 1/2 months in rain and high wind!! 
Large drums filled with water were used as anchor points. 
Heavy duty rope was used for the diagonal supports. 
The crossbeam to which the fabric was attached underwent significant bending during that period. After the first month or so, Ed rotated these sandwiched beams so that the major stress was on the long dimension of the 1x4s (which were made using a 4' and an 8' 1x4 to get the full 12' length), and screwed the beam into the delta crossbeam to prevent it from rotating.

==Delta Shades at Figment (July 8, 2007)==
This design uses only twelve equilateral 12"x12"x12" 1/2' plywood triangles. For the desert you will need to use twice this amount of equilateral triangles i.e. six per 8'x8'x8' triangles instead of just three.

==Building a Delta Shade==

===Dimensions===
Length: 25' Height: 8' Width: 10' 
Those are suggested dimensions. Bigger dimensions using available 2x4 studs could be 10' tall and 12' wide (large dimensions are not recommended in high-wind areas). 

===Materials===

Materials needed to build a Delta Shade 10 foot wide by 20 foot long. 

(12) wood studs 2x4 x8' ($50) 
(4) wood studs 2x4 x10' ($20) 
(4) wood studs 1x4 x10' ($10) 
(1) sheet of 3/4" plywood (the cheap kind, such as CDX sheathing, is fine) ($30) 
(2) rolls of (preferably pink/orange) tape ($5) 
(4) T-shirts (you can get them back when you disassemble the Delta Shade) 
(1) shade cloth (preferably pink/orange) 10'x35' ($80) or 4 mil polyethylene sheet if low-wind situation ($20) 
(8) 15' ratchet straps ($40) or 100' half-inch rope ($8) 
(4) 3' metal stakes ($5) 
(50) 1 5/8' screws ($5) 
(50) 2 1/2' screws ($5) 

Total cost (approx.): $200-$250

===Tools you will need===

Necessary (Recommended) 
Wood Saw (Jigsaw) 
Wood Saw (Circular saw) 
Philips screwdriver (Screwgun with philips head and 5/8th" wood bit) 
Something hard and heavy to hammer the stakes into the ground (Sledgehammer) 

Note: if you cut the plywood pieces in advance (highly recommended) you will not need a saw during the installation.

===How to===

A Delta Shade can be assembled by one person alone but it is recommended to be at least 3 people (5 is the easiest) to build and assemble your Delta Shade. It will take one person with experience plus a crew of four about 1 hour to build and assemble a Delta Shade once materials and tools are gathered. An experienced crew of four can assemble a Delta Shade in 20 minutes.

CUT 
1. Cut twenty-four equilateral (12"x12"x12") triangles of 1/2" plywood OR 24x 8"x8"x8" of 3/4' plywood (13.5" triangles if you use the cutting plan below). 
2. Cut eight L-shaped 18"x18" (curved in the center) in 3/4" plywood (24" x 21" if using the cutting plan below). 
(For Cdjilnik's method using a single sheet of 3/4" CDX ply, see [http://www.forepath.org/DeltaShade%20Plycut.pdf this cutting plan and instructions] to produce items 1 and 2 with minimum waste and more strength for your Delta Shade). 

SCREW 
3. Screw six triangles and three 2x4 x8' together to create a 8'x8'x8' triangle. The plywood triangles go beyond the 2x4 stud and create the points of the resulting 8'x8'x8' triangle. Repeat three times to get a total of four 8'x8'x8' triangles. 
4. Assemble two 2x4 x10' to two 8'x8'x8' triangles connecting them together using four L-shaped plywood. Make sure the right angles are squared. Repeat one time to get a total of two frames. Be gentle with your frames. They need to be triangulated (step #5) to gain strength. 

DRILL AND HOOK 
5. On each frame, drill one 5/8" holes in the four equilateral triangles closest to the L-shapes. The holes should be centered and a 1/2" from the side of the 12"x12"x12" triangle that faces the center of the 8'x8'x8' triangle. 
6. Hook one end of the ratchet strap in the hole created in step #5 and hook the other end of the same ratchet strap in the diagonally opposite hole. Tighten gently, use the ratchet to straighten the strap, not to pull on the opposite corners, especially when only one ratchet-strap is in place. Repeat for 3 other ratchet straps to triangulate both frames. Adjust ratchet-straps so they are all the same length. Do not apply too much force to the ratchet as they could easily bend the 2x4 x10' studs and eventually weaken your Delta Shade. 

MORE SCREWING 
7. Lay shade cloth on the ground. Roll one 1x4 x10' four times at one small end of the cloth. Screw a free 1x4 x10' stud to the one wrapped inside the cloth. The goal is to sandwich the cloth tightly between the two 1x4 x10' studs in order to distribute the stress. Repeat at the other end of the shade cloth. 

PROTECT 
8. Wrap a T-shirt (or similar-sized cloth) around the L-shaped plywood piece and the end of the 2x4 x10' stud and hold it in place with some packing tape. Do the same for the L-shaped plywood at the other end of that 2x4 x10' stud. Cover the outer edge of the 10' stud with packing tape. Repeat on the other frame. 
9. On each frame, use more packing tape to cover the edge that will be in contact with the shade cloth on the 2x4 x10' stud opposite to the one protected in step #8. 

ALIGN 
10. Align both frames, taped T-shirts ends facing out, ready to receive the shade cloth. 
11. Install each end of the shade cloth-wrapped 1x4 x10' studs in the two nooks created by the L-shaped plywood pieces on both frames. 
12. Adjust the angle of each frame to the desired effect. If this is your first time, try to place one side of each frame perpendicular to the ground. You can get creative with this angle later. The structure should now be balanced and one person at each end should only have to gently hold the delta shade in place. 

ANCHOR 
13. Hook one end of each of the four remaining ratchet straps (you can also use ropes instead of ratchet straps) to the highest angle of each frame. Pull it gently to the ground making sure that part of the ratchet strap touches the out-most edge/angle of the delta shade. 
14. Drive a stake into the ground where the ratchet strap meets the ground. Hook the other end of the four ratchet straps to the stakes. Adjust each ratchet strap [http://www.all-auto.ro/auto-second-hand vanzari auto]. 
15. Enjoy your new Delta Shade!!! 
16. Make sure you check and readjust the tension of the four anchor points daily, especially in windy environments.

We've got the 3 story paddlewheel boat, "The Queen of Hearts," again!! This is the same boat of Bioluminescence fame. This time we are taking it out in the middle of the day in the heat of August Summer.

We will have a top floor all open and a wading pool on the top deck. Bring your bathing suits!! Luscious beats and delicious drinks....and all your favorite freaks!

This will be a way to say "bon voyage" and send blessings to our wayward burners on their way out to the playa.

Zev/Wolf (Wolf+Lamb) 
After meeting Gadi (lamb) at a party in Williamsburg in 2001, the two became friends and Gadi introduced Zev to minimal techno. As co-conspirators, they began plotting what would one day become Wolf + Lamb. Since finding his musical home, Zev has amassed a collection and musical repertoire that spans the gamut of minimal dance music. From his background in design and web, Zev still produces all the media for Wolf + Lamb, and oversees the technology. His first original co-productions were released on Wolf + Lamb Music in 2006, with more to come.

Sub Swara is a live electronic crew that represents the best in lo-frequency hi-vibration culture. The Sub Swara Live Set is a balance of practiced musical refinement and on-the-fly improvisation. The Garden of Lights. 

The Rex will carry several letters of the Disorient Sign on one side and will have speakers mounted on the other side. The front vehicle will be a lounge and the back will be for the DJ and the amp racks. The outside will be peppered with hundreds of LED fixtures sequenced by Leo creating a bright and colorful 60 ft. long moving object at night. The top will have a strong roof rack which will become the main anchor point for roof and sides installations.

wow! great day... a/c roof units are removed (Big Dawg, Jan and FriarTuck), sanding has been done (Archer, MsHotTamale, HotSauce, E.J.) , paint has been applied (Hot Sauce), the inside is almost completely gutted (Thunderstick), and a shade structure has been set up for a comfortable oasis in the Navy Yard... 
Big thanks to all the hands on the Rex today!!!! 
POWER POWER POWER... we need another generator desperately, 3500 Watts or more... 
we also could us a couple ladders (4ft. and 8ft.) 
and if anyone has access to an engine hoist or cherry picker... let me know and i can come and pick it up.

Big up to Dough for finding a way to remove the freon from the A/C system and being at the Rex at 7AM (with Matt) to meet with the freon removers. Without this, today would not have been so productive. Thank you Dave for the guidance. 
The Navy Yard has striking similarities with the desert. 
1. We're pretty much by ourselves there. 
2. You can see a lot of sky. 
3. There is no easy access to food and water. 
4. You're in the sun all day. 
Keep this in mind when you go there...

Went really well. 

Turnout: Eye, Hotsauce, Biddog, Garrison and Ray,
their vinyl guy who's name I cant remember, Archer,
Matt the welder and Dave his buddy welder,
JesterJaimie, Udi, and Sam-a guy who works at at big
metal shop in NJ. Doh came out later to drop off the
shade. 

Painters seem to have made a paint plan and some
materials estimates which archer will post to the
puddle later. Udi and Eye worked out speaker
placement. Matt and Dave have two plans for the roof
deck/speaker mounts- one failsafe, one alternate idea
that sam is making a sample bracket for today. Matt
and Sam will meet at the bus late in the afternoon and
Matt is picking up the bus manual at the bus today. 

Udi Eye and I worked out an Amp rack plan/cooling
cabinet. Hotsauce is trying to secure nearby
electricity and water supply, bathroom usage. 

Many good plans laid last night, but the big trick now
is getting others on board to commit to sticking with
projects and seeing them through to the end. It is a
task that takes constant puddle care. There is a
sizable work load ahead. 

Navy Yard is in many ways a dream location- remote
enough for what we are doing but not terribly hard to
get to- security seems better than we could have
wished, the view can't be beat! Food is perhaps the
only missing link. It is hard to schedule an all day
work call without a way for everyone to easily step
out for food- need to explore delivery options, etc.
This was a bigger issue than we might have expected
during Dex workcalls...

Ben's recommendations: 
The night after his return he handed me (Lowroad) a list of 11 items that he suspects will need attention. I have included it here in its entirety: 

1) COOLING SYSTEM AND RADIATOR NEEDS FIXED. He said
that he "removed the valves from the thermostat" and
explained that the valves are somehow involved in
telling the radiator when to turn on and off. By
removing the valves he was able to keep the engine
cooling system running constantly with out risk of the
thermostat shutting it off. What exactly Ben did to
the engine should be looked at... and a better
solution should be found 
2) MIRROR ON PASSENGER SIDE IS MISSING. We found this
mirror during clean up of the bus on tuesday. a
bracket must be built for it. 
3) SEAT FOR DRIVER. apparently the seat is very
uncomfortable for long drives. 
4) NOTE: ON THE PANEL BEHIND THE DRIVER IS A BATTERY
ON/OFF SWITCH 
5) THE BUS GETS ABOUT 6 MPG. TANK IS 150 GALLONS 
6) BUS SHOULD CARRY AT LEAST ONE SPARE TIRE AT ALL
TIMES 
7) WINDSHIELD WIPERS DO NOT WORK

The outside will be peppered with hundreds of LED fixtures sequenced by Leo creating a bright and colorful 60 ft. long moving object at night. The top will have a strong roof rack which will become the main anchor point for roof and sides installations.

Driving tips: 
1. Start engine. 
2. The annoying sound is normal. Wait a couple of minutes for pressure to build in the air break tanks. The annoying sound will stop when there is enough pressure and it is ok to drive. 
3. Push the big black button towards located around center of the dashboard ALL THE WAY to be in driving mode. If you don't push all the way you will hear an air sound which is normal but you need to push all the way until the button snaps into position to be able to drive. You are not supposed to have your foot on the brake pedal when you do that. 
4. Put in 1st gear, or reverse depending on the situation. The gear display is off by 1 so get used to it before getting on the road. 
5. When you're done driving, put the gear in Neutral and pull the big black button all the way back towards you. This is the parking brake. 
6. When you're done driving for the day, you must empty the air tank. To do this you gently push on the big black button until you hear no more air coming out. This will take a couple of minutes. 

Practice 1-5 a couple of times before getting on the road. It is not difficult but it does require some adjustment from driving a vehicle without air brakes.

====Ideas====
- Arcs formed from 1-1/2 In.(1 7/8" OD) Polyethylene Pipe (can be bend without any heating) mounted with u-bolts to DEX side posts. 
- ability to use roof covering as daytime shade similar to an RV awning 
- lighting truss mounted on the fascia above the lounge cut-outs. It can be ratchet-strapped or chained to the side of the roof rack where we normally mount the [[Sign | Small Sign]] 
- some kind of wagon wheel representations 
- not trailering a generator; mounting one on the front or rear of the DeX and perhaps another one on the roof 
- perhaps creating simple barriers around the roof, with foam padding, covered by stapled cloth to create a chillspace and increase the people capacity

3 arcs will be attached with u-bolts. For 2 in the front and one for the rear Simas will make a simple bolt on bracket.

We will need 6pcs 25' plastic pipe. As arcs at the rear & at the front will be mounted with brackets, place them on angle to give better wagon look. Proposed wheel design. What size? On the scale sketch 7'dia looks about right for me.

====Repairs needed====
- Air brakes (Alarm of the compressed air tanks does not stop even when the tanks are full--tank is leaking and needs to be repaired/changed) 
- Several lights are broken 
- Alternate gas Tank needs to be emptied a bit (-=7=-) 
- Alternate gas tank (or the line?) has a whole in it which need to be repaired (-=7=-) 
- Internal lights need to be checked (-=7=-) 
- Would be nice to have some type of small handle on the main door 

Wayne's did good work for cheap in August 2007. For air brakes they recommended a truck stop just outside Reno going towards Wadsworth on the Interstate.

Repairs needed: 
- Alarm of the compressed air tanks does not stop even when the tanks are full. 

Pauly a very helpful guy from Sunshine Service (775-358-5486 did Dex lube, oil and filter service in 2006 for $201.14) recommends Wayne's Automotive for oil/lube change. Call Pauly for more info if needed.

Dex has an appointment for lube/oil service at Wayne's for Monday August 20th. Wayne's doesn't do air-breaks but will recommend a place.

The Dex carries [[sign|Disorient Signs]], [[art installations]] and lounge to deep playa destinations during Burning Man 2007. 
 
The right side of the Dex opens-up onto the Playa and carries the [[small sign|Small Sign]]. This 10-foot opening allows perceptual connections between inside and outside. A large step made of speakers allows guests to jump in and out of the lounge when the bus is stopped. DEXers also like to dance on that speaker stack.

On its left side, the Dex carries three letters from the [[sign|DISORIENT Sign]]. 
Depending on which letters are added access to the gas tank and battery can be blocked. Jumper cables (leads) must be clamped and secured to the battery before putting the letters on. In addition, a large flexible tube with a large attached funnel must be secured to just outside of the gas tank entry valve so that when adding gas there is no issue with accessing the gas tank to add fuel and one only needs to open the tank and insert the tube.

In 2005 and 2006, the last six letters of the Sign were installed in front of the DISORIENT [[camp]]. In 2007, those letters are installed on the new addition to the [[Disorient Express]]: the [[Rex|Rex]].

A [http://www.flyvision.org/dis/2002/slideshow/firmament.05.html Firmament]-inspired light sculpture is installed on the roof along with other sculptures/[[art installations|installations]] by members of Disorient including inflatables by [http://www.akairways.com Anakin Koenig]. A [[dex03|rack]] is especially designed to securely hold those pieces. The bus is equiped with a comfortable DJ booth (in a private area in the front), [[sound|Disorient's sound system]] and a public lounge in the back.

The Dex changes location several times during Burning Man but it is not meant to be a transportation unit like the Nautilus. It is a mobile installation that changes context. It is docked next to large-scale installation and gives Disorienters and Burners the opportunity to experience sculptures and the deep playa for extended periods of time. The Dex paired with selected playa installations creates a dramatic yet comfortable environment that includes dance floor, chill-out area and many art works by members of the [[disorient|Disorient collective]]. The body of the DISORIENT EXPRESS is covered with gold mylar.

When in travelling mode: 
- the stage/stairs fold-up and close the large opening on the right side of the bus; 
- the part of the circular sofa that is outside the volume of the bus on the left side collapses or slides-in; 
- the dj booth slides back inside the volume of the bus. 
The storage area in the back below the zero-gravity chair is accessible from the door (not shown on these drawings) at the back of the bus.

The front of the bus is a private area with individual lockers for Disorienters. Dancing poles around the dj booth help the bus stay structurally sound.

Both racks (above and under the vehicle) are built on the same principle. Each rack is made of three hollow metallic poles (6" x 4" section) that cover the entire length of the vehicle. Those poles are connected to each other and attached to strong metal beams that hold he body of the bus. Each pole has slots (every foot or so) on its sides, large enough to slide two 2x4 wooden studs next to each other. 
 
The 2x4 studs of variable length (from 8' to 12') slide in and out of both sides of the vehicle allowing large and heavy equipment/artworks to be installed on top and on the sides of the vehicle.

Possible finishes for the outside of the Dex: 
- matte black (so the support disappears in the night and the attached artworks and the inside are more distinct) 
- gold 
- matte playa color (like the Borg containers)
